At first glance, poor country debt can seem like a tricky issue to raise in the classroom. However, the issues surrounding poor country debt form a significant part of the background to other issues, like poverty and trade justice issues, and are well worth exploring.- research
- use of statistics
- communication
- debating
- negotiation
- taking part in community-based activities, and
- reflecting on the process of participating.
It provides an opportunity for students to help bring about social change nationally and internationally, as well as to understand more about global interdependence and responsibility, both required in the Citizenship curriculum.
Aspects of knowledge and understanding can also be covered across the curriculum (see document on the right), as well as making a topical and thought-provoking theme for an assembly or a display in a classroom or common area.
Many people work tirelessly to ensure students get a chance not only to learn about poverty issues, but also equip them with the empowerment and resources to make a change to a system that is so unfair.
One volunteer, Hugh Gibbons, has been working with schools and teachers in the Portsmouth area and beyond this Debt Week, getting poverty on the agenda for many, and inspiring students to make a stand against injustice.
