News and action update

Dear campaigner,

Today Gordon Brown is in New York for a UN meeting to discuss global poverty. Eight years ago the UK along with all the other countries of the world signed up to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), promising to halve global poverty by 2015.

While many have criticised the MDGs for not going far enough, today rich countries are in danger of not even meeting these perfectly achievable targets, and breaking their promises to the world's poor.

One of the goals - Goal 8 - includes dealing 'comprehensively' with the developing country debt crisis. But as our Pick Up the Pace campaign highlights, the debt relief delivered in the last decade has only eliminated 20% of unpayable debt, with at least $400 billion to go.

Click here to ask the UK government to Pick Up the Pace. Plus you can also download our new Pick Up the Pace MP lobby pack, and take the campaign to your MP during Debt Week.

Today's summit may well produce a reaffirmation of promises - but we will need to pressure politicians in the months and years ahead if we're going to make sure the goals are really met.

Many thanks for all your support,
Jubilee Debt Campaign

Ecuador debt conference

Jubilee Debt Campaign's Director Nick Dearden was in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, last week for an international campaigners' conference on illegitimate debt. It comes as Ecuador's government prepares to complete the world's first government-backed audit of a country's debts later this month.

Debt and the financial crisis

The crisis in the world markets has seen politicians from Jacques Delors to Gordon Brown making the case for greater regulation of financial markets. But does this new-found interest in cleaning up global finance extend to the system that is keeping people poor in the global South?
