Loan sharks stalk Glastonbury
26 June 2007
Sharp-suited loan sharks from the World Bank and International Monetary Fund cut a surprising figure at this year’s Glastonbury Festival, offering quick and easy loans to unsuspecting festivalgoers – with no questions asked.
They were bringing our new campaign to
Lift the Lid on Bad Loans to the mud and mayhem of the Somerset countryside. The campaign calls for rich countries to investigate the dodgy loans they gave to oppressive regimes and for arms sales in the past, and cancel all ‘illegitimate’ debts that the world’s poor are still paying back.
As well as the sharks, we parked our distinctive Drop the Debt bus – last seen sporting a Make Poverty History exterior in the vicinity of Gleneagles in 2005 – by the Other Stage, where acts such as Mika, Iggy Pop, Bjork and Arcade Fire played their sets.
The star prize of the Drop the Debt raffle was the chance to watch the Chemical Brothers - from the top deck of the bus.
