Keep the pressure on: update your MP
Here’s how to keep your MP up to date on UK Export Finance (or as we’ve been calling it, the Department for Dodgy Deals) in three easy steps.
- Find your MP’s email address by clicking here. Click on their name and their full contact details will appear.
If you don’t know who your MP is go to www.theyworkforyou.com to find out. - Download the CUBE briefing for MPs (PDF, 223k) which keeps them up to date with the campaign to reform UK Export Finance.
- Attach the file to an email, and copy the text below (filling in their name, your past contact, and your name and address), and send. Or if you prefer you can print the briefing and send it in the post to your MP at: House of Commons, Westminster, SW1A 0AA.
Model letter
Dear [Enter your MPs name] MP,
I am attaching a short update on the Clean Up Britain’s Exports campaign, which is calling for reform of UK Export Finance (the new name for the Export Credits Guarantee Department).
[If they've signed Early Day Motion 622, you could thank them here. Or if you've written to them before, or came on the Dictator Debt demonstration in October, you could mention that].
The origins and justice of the debts owed to UK Export Finance, and the lack of human rights or environmental standards for exports supported by the department, are of continuing concern to me. I am pleased that the Government has begun to look into the origins of UKEF debts, but disappointed that it has still not disclosed the full information that it holds. In the case of Egypt's the new admission that part of the debt comes from military sales to Mubarak strengthens the case for this debt to be dropped.
