Ideas for Jubilee Schools

EVENT: Drop the Debt Fast
A 36-day rolling fast in April and May will focus on 36 countries which still desperately need debt cancellation. There are many ways in which school communities might get involved in the fast. Go here for more information.
Fast

EVENT: Journey to Justice
Ten years after 70,000 campaigners formed a human chain in Birmingham to demand debt cancellation for millions of the world's poorest, a lot has been achieved, but a lot remains to be done. On May 18, campaigners will again meet in Birmingham, to look back at what's been done, but more importantly: to look forward to what still needs to be achieved. Go here for further details. If you're reasonably local, please consider bringing a group of students for the day! If not, this is still an important anniversary which could be the focus of debt action in your school community.

IDEA: Set up a display area
This won't take much time, but can be one of the most effective things you do! Use the display material we send you, download some more from the site here, or make your own (a template and some ideas are here, but the sky's the limit really!).

Debt, poverty and changing the world

IDEA: Raise the issues at an assembly
If you'd like to use a PowerPoint presentation, you can find quite a few on the website - go here. As a general introduction to the issues, we recommend Debt, poverty and changing the world; however the Debt and... presentations are excellent if you'd like to show how debt impacts on other major issues. Climate change is very topical; girls' schools might like to look at Debt and Women...

IDEA: Pass on some information to other staff
Many teachers are surprised to see how well social justice issues can be addressed within almost any subject area! Teachers who may be unsure of where to start on debt in their particular area of the curriculum may be interested in looking at Getting Into Debt in Education, which gives ideas for teaching on debt in all of the major subject areas - go here to download a copy.
