Global Debt Week: October 2007

From 14-21 October 2007 anti-poverty campaigners around the world are taking part in a global week of action against debt and the international financial institutions.

The week will highlight the continuing scandal of unpayable and illegitimate poor country debt, ahead of the annual meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund in Washington DC.

Jubilee Debt Campaign is joining with Jubilee campaigns in 60 other countries to take part in the week, which was called for in a joint declaration at the World Social Forum in Nairobi, Kenya, in January.

Some ways to get involved in the week:

1. Lobby your MP on Lift the Lid
Take part in our Lift the Lid MP lobby day on Friday 19 October, or visit your MP at some point during the week. Print off our MP lobby pack or order one in the post.

2. Tell Douglas to Cut the Strings at the World Bank
Douglas Alexander, the new International Development Secretary, has his first big test on debt this autumn, as the World Bank asks for funding from the UK. Will he keep up the pressure to end harmful conditions? Take action



3. Read about Thomas Sankara
15 October is the 20th anniversary of the death of Thomas Sankara, the former President of Burkina Faso who called for repudiation of debt. Commemorative events are taking place around the world. Read more or London event
