Drop the Debt @ Glastonbury 2010

5 July 2010

It was Glastonbury's 40th Anniversary and Jubilee Debt Campaign took the Drop The Debt bus to help celebrate and campaign in the glorious sunshine.

As Glastonbury entered its middle age, The Jubilee Debt Campaign (or Jubilee Debt Coalition as it was back then) was also celebrating ten years since the world’s biggest petition (24 million people) calling for the end of unfair third world debts and showing solidarity with those impoverished people whose voices are often not heard. The Drop The Debt bus was a big success at this year’s very special festival. As always, we were at the Other Stage and this year we were campaigning to End Britain’s Dodgy Deals by asking for fundamental changes to be made to the ECGD (Export Credits Guarantee Department).

Glastonbury is a unique opportunity for Jubilee Debt Campaign to reach out and promote our work to a huge and interested audience and to involve them in our campaigns. This year was no exception and we are so happy to have had literally thousands of Glastonbury-goers sign our petition and become involved in our campaign. The bus was busier than ever, and our volunteers were supported by festival-goers, performers and staff in the call for ECGD to face scrutiny and change.

King Porter Stomp

We are very pleased to have the support of many performers and bands who came over to the Drop The Debt bus to perform outside the bus and help make a noise about our campaign. Some bands went a step further and helped us by campaigning for us on stage and wearing our Drop The Debt tshirts. People all over the festival sported Drop The Debt stickers, badges in support and solidarity. One of our stickers was even on the front page of the Sunday Times!

We’d like to thank everybody who paid us a visit, signed our petition, our volunteers, the performers who supported us and Glastonbury festivals for allowing us to reach such a wonderful audience. See you all next year!

Thanks to the following bands who made such a difference to the Drop The Debt bus and who provided the perfect backdrop for our campaigning and/or supported us in other ways. Please support the bands and take a moment to check out their websites!
