Pick Up the Pace

Debt relief is coming too slowly, and is too limited, for millions of people living in poverty. Please ask the UK government to pick up the pace.

So far some $88 billion of debt has been cancelled through international schemes, following pressure from debt campaigners.

But many poor countries are still paying more in debts than they spend on health or education.

In fact, only 20% of unpayable poor country debt has been dropped.

More than $400 billion of unpayable debt must still be cancelled for all governments to be able to meet their people’s basic needs, with at least some cancellation for around 100 countries.

Ten years after world leaders promised to tackle the debt crisis, please ask the UK government to pick up the pace.

Dear International Development Secretary, In 1998 tens of thousands of campaigners stood in a human chain outside the G8 meeting in Birmingham, demanding a debt-free start for a billion people. I am concerned that, a decade later, we are still a long way from our destination. Some debts have been cancelled, and the UK has played a leading role in this achievement. But there must be a lasting solution to the debt crisis. In many countries, people are still dying needlessly while their governments service their debts. Over $400 billion of debt needs to be cancelled, across some 100 poor countries. I urge you to: 1. Deliver the UK multilateral debt relief scheme to all of the poorest countries. 2. Cancel all developing countries' unpayable and unjust debts, including export credit debts. 3. Use your influence to persuade other rich countries, companies and institutions to cancel all unpayable and unjust poor country debts. I urge you to pick up the pace and drop ALL the debt!
