Back from the Dead?

Dear supporter,

The Vulture Funds Bill could be back from the dead.

It was Conservative backbencher Christopher Chope MP who objected on Friday. And Shadow Chancellor George Osborne says this was without his approval. He says the Conservatives are willing to co-operate if the Bill is put back on the agenda.

As a result, the Bill could now still go through Parliament on Thursday, but only if Harriet Harman MP makes time for it in the next few hours.

Will you send Harriet Harman an urgent email right now, and ask you friends to do so as well?

We'll put George Osborne’s full clarification of the Conservative Party's position on our website shortly, in the Campaign Latest section.

Why by the end of today? If the Bill is going to be given further Parliamentary time, it needs to be decided by the end of today, as two days notice must be given for MPs to put down amendments. So it really is a matter of hours.

Thanks you so much for all your help,
Jonathan

Dear Harriet Harman MP

I am writing to urge you to decide by the end of today to give Government time to the Debt Relief (Developing Countries) Bill on Thursday 18 March. It is currently listed under 'remaining orders of the day' and is highly unlikely to be passed. Your intervention is needed to make official Government time for it instead.

I am sure like me you were very disappointed that a Conservative MP blocked the Debt Relief (Developing Countries) Bill on its third reading in Parliament on 12 March. However, George Osborne has stated "The Conservative frontbench did not object to further progress of the Debt Relief Bill on Friday 12 March 2010, nor in any way collude with the objection. The Bill is due to be debated this Thursday and we are willing to co-operate with the Government to allow this Bill to progress on that day."

As a result, the Government still has the power to prevent the Bill from dying a death. I do hope you will promise to take the necessary action to ensure vulture funds are no longer able to prey on the world's poor.

Yours sincerely,
