1 December 2009

Good news: Labour MP Andrew Gwynne, number three on the Private Members' Ballot, has agreed to sponsor a bill targeting Vulture Funds.

Jubilee Debt Campaign is delighted that Andrew Gwynne, Labour MP for Denton and Reddish, has announced he will be taking up a Private Member's Bill to crack down on third world debt vultures. Andrew, who is third in the Private Members' Ballot, an annual draw to give a handful of MPs the chance to propose their own laws, has announced the news on his website.

This is a big step forward for our campaign to End the Vulture Culture. Last week's case of two vultures swooping on Liberia for $20 million shows that existing measures to tackle these appalling funds are not working.

But we haven't won yet. There are several stages of a Private Member's Bill making its way through Parliament where campaigners will need to keep up the pressure to make sure enough MPs support the bill for it to become law. And it’ll be a race against time to get it through before the election.
