ACT NOW: Drop Egypt's dictator debt

When dictator Hosni Mubarak was overthrown, he left Egypt saddled with over $30 billion of debt.

The Popular Campaign to Drop Egypt’s Debt, based in Egypt, is leading the call for an investigation of all Mubarak’s debts, and the cancellation of those which are unjust. Jubilee Debt Campaign supports this call.

We have uncovered documents in the National Archives showing that some of Egypt’s £100 million debt to the UK comes from military sales to Mubarak. But Business Minister Vince Cable has refused to order an investigation and insists these debts must be repaid - despite Liberal Democrat party policy clearly stating their support for cancellation of dictator debts. 

The British government must take responsibility for the support given to dictatorial regimes through loans to buy arms and other goods. As Egyptians continue their struggle for democracy, it’s time to break the chains of dictator debt.
