OUR DODGY DEALS CAMPAIGN IS WORKING
Over 15,000 people have joined our campaign to expose the skeletons in the cupboard at UK Export Finance. For two years we’ve been told the Government no longer holds information on the dodgy deals behind more than £2 billion of debts ‘owed’ by impoverished countries.
But through campaigner pressure and research, the information is coming out. We’ve forced the Government to dig out the original contracts - though they haven't made them public. We've uncovered that:
- More than a quarter of Egypt’s £100 million debt comes from loans for military equipment to dictators Mubarak and Sadat.
- Zimbabwe’s £210 million debt includes loans to Mugabe's police force while it was engaged in internal repression.
- Three-quarters of Indonesia’s £450 million debt comes from military loans to General Suharto, including Hawk jets used to crush protest.
These debts are unjust and should not be repaid.
But now we need to take the next step and force the government to come clean on all 16,967 deals which turned into debts. Then people in borrower countries, and the UK, can determine all the debts that should be cancelled.
