ACT NOW: Ask the UK to support IMF debt relief

In September the International Monetary Fund will decide what to do with its excess profits from selling gold and bumper lending during the financial crisis.

Ask Andrew Mitchell, the UK International Development Minister, to support proposals to use the funds for debt relief.

More than 15,000 people around the world signed our petition to the IMF earlier this year calling for gold sales to be used for debt cancellation, and we've got debt relief onto the IMF's list of options.

But the signs currently are the IMF would prefer to use the money to boost its reserves, increase its already huge income or give out more new loans.

Dear Secretary of State, The International Monetary Fund is awash with money. It has a windfall of almost $3 billion from selling gold, on top of a projected annual profit of $1.3 billion this year and $2.3 billion in 2012. Despite cheerleading financial deregulation, the IMF is doing well out of the economic crisis it helped to create. I understand that one option for some of the gold windfall is to set the money aside to pay off all the arrears owed to the IMF by the remaining countries in the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries Initiative. Doing so would ensure such countries get genuine debt cancellation, rather than being given new loans and undoing benefits from debt relief. A further option is to set aside the money to cancel debts for countries suffering from catastrophic disasters and economic shocks. I call on the UK government to support both these options at the IMF discussions on the gold windfall in September 2011. I look forward to hearing what position the UK government takes.
